How to change the default location (C:/Program Files) when installing software.

Here’s how by doing registry tricks.

All you need is to partition your hard drive.

Now Go to;

1. Start > Run

2. Type “regedit”

3. Go to this directory…
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ProgramFilesDir\

Then look for the value named ProgramFilesDir. by default, this value will be C:\Program Files. Edit the value to any valid drive or folder and XP will use that new location as the default installation directory for the new programs.

But if you don't have an extra time to do the tricks manually, I also made an alternative way to change the default location (C:/Program Files) when installing software by using notepad.

Here’s how

1. Start > Run

2. Type "notepad" or "notepad.exe"

3. Then copy and paste the code below

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft] [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MicrosoftWindows]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion] "ProgramFilesDir"="D:\\Program Files\\"

4. Then save the file anywhere inside your My Documents as "Change Installation Directory.reg" without quotes. Now after saving, just double click Change Installation Directory.reg, the installation will automatically change after you click 'OK' button.

Note: If want to move it back again to the default destination just replace "ProgramFilesDir"="D:\\Program Files\\" to "ProgramFilesDir"="C:\\Program Files\\"
